So I know I haven’t provided you with a whole lot of running updates but I have still been running! I will have an update about my Chi-Running weekend here soon but here are just some general running updates!
So I have been moving along in my training. I will say that it was 10 times easier to run when I had a full week of work off. I really envy those people that work from home or do some type of work that allows them to exercise whenever they feel like instead of whenever they can. I thought about how much more running I could do if I didn’t have to be at work for 9 hours a day. Moral of my rant… work is getting in the way of my running!
But at least for 1 week it didn’t! I was able to get out and run almost every day over my Christmas/New Year’s break and the best part… most of the those days I was able to run outside which for sure makes running 10X better. I am right on track for my 6 month training schedule for the half marathon which requires me to complete anywhere from 12-15 miles a week for the next month or so. My week off goal was to run 6 miles in a day and I achieve that goal so I was pumped =)
I have been doing about half of my workout inside and half of it outside. That usually means that I do 2 or so miles inside and then anywhere from 2-4 outside. Most of the time I remember to turn on my app but sometimes I forget… then I notice when I don’t hear her pleasant voice telling me how far I have gone! Right before Christmas I did the 2 miles inside and then another 2 miles out and it felt great. Not too incredibly slow at a 10:31 average pace- I’m finding that is more of less my comfortable pace when I know I am running more than 2-3 miles. When I run on the treadmill though it seems to be closer to a 11 min mile. And oh gosh is it hot in that gym- no fans. Well one day I saw a guy carry a fan over near him and turned it on and for the life of me I can’t figure out where he got the thing. I find it hard to believe he brought it with him but hey I’m a big fan of being proactive so if he did props to him.
I also managed to get down to a 10:21 pace for 2 and half miles. At the very beginning of this run I was kicking some serious ass at under a 7 min miles but I’m not ready to maintain that sort of pace yet. Maybe it about 6 months haha. I’ll let you know then.
Ohhhh and I got NEW tennis shoes for Christmas!! I know I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again and again Asics are the best shoes you can buy if you want to run. A runner gave me that advice once and I laughed it off until I finally splurged and got myself a pair and then it was like magic on my feet. Robin, Tim’s mom, got me these new tennis for Christmas and I couldn’t be happier. I don’t think I realized how worn out my old shoes were until I put these things on. They were soo cushy and just felt like a big hug- and who doesn’t love their feet to get a hug?
I have tried other shoes and I think they are fine but I think Asics are just absolutely great. I should get a part time job at a shoe store for a weekend so I get the discount and then I can buy a few pairs of shoes. That would make me very happy.
Oh and Tim also got some new Asics… his first pair (well to the best of his knowledge) and he agrees 100%.. they are the best! Plus, now we think it is fun to have the same shoes- well his aren’t pink (yea disappointing I know) but they are the same style and everything so they look pretty much the same. One more thing to make us… SUPER DORKS! But we like it that way.
So off to a good start for the winter but feeling like mother nature will slow me down… literally… in more than one way. When it snows I am not willing to drive all around to go get on a treadmill. Fitness is a priority but my life is more of one and I am smart enough to know
One of my goals for the week was to run 11 miles (per my ½ marathon plan, which I think they should call a halfathon) and I am pretty well on my way at this point!
You probably already read about the 3 miles that Tim and I did outside the other day in our Ohio running gear! Luckily, I scored another really nice evening on Wednesday night and was able to run outside with my mom! We met at the gym and I did about 1.5 miles on the treadmill to get myself warmed up. The gym has a 30 min max out time on the treadmill if people are waiting (and tis the reason for ppl to be waiting) so it is nice when I can do a simple warm up there and then head out. I was also lucky enough that my mom brought me an ear warmer headband since I didn’t have one stashed away in the car! We went out and ran another 2 miles per the wonderful app on my iPhone and then I dropped Mom off at her car! She gets in a lot of miles throughout the week on her own so usually I have to do a little further then her.
I realized that I really start to hit my stride at about 2 miles or so now which is great since I didn’t used to hit it until about 3. I also realized how much nicer it is to run outside when I am not overheating and sweating to death like I am on the treadmill. I guess this means I should move to North Carolina or something where I can run most days outside and still feel great! After my mom headed home I decided to go out and do another mile so I could get a total of 4.5 in that day!
That last mile was great.. it went by really fast and since I don’t actually live where the gym is, I enjoyed looking at some different scenery than the stuff that is around my house I am used to seeing! My pace has stayed pretty steady at around 11:30 something so I’d like to see it get to under 11min/mile by the time the
½ marathon halfathon hits (yes I am making that happen). I managed to do that one 5K with less than 10 min miles but I don’t foresee that happening for 13.1 miles.
A successful run I say…
I also managed to get in 2 miles on the rower during workout class last night! It was tough to go the 1.5 miles after all of the lifting and crazy tough workout but it was worth it in the end! I think tomorrow morning I’ll head to the gym and get 2 or so in which will put me over my 11 mile goal! Anytime you can exceed a goal is a good day, I think!
P.S. I have really been into a few songs to listen to during my running… I am OBSESSED with “This City” and “It Girl” so check them out if you haven’t yet. And if you ever have to run up a really big hill Miley Cyrus’s “The Climb” can get you through it!
Or maybe not?
I have pretty much assumed a new rule that if it is above freezing what-so-ever I will run outside. So when I left work and it was 42 degrees out (and just barely light out) I was pumped to go home and put on some running clothes. The real treat was that Tim had agreed to go with me!
So after Tim walked in the door, we got all of our goods on and headed out. So up there you are looking at a girl with leggings, socks, shorts, 2 long sleeve shirts, a Harry Potter hat (yep I am that cool), and gloves. That is a lot of extra weight to be carrying around while I run but last time I ran without a hat on I had a headache for 2 days from the cold air.
We only made it 3 miles (well I dropped Tim off at the house at 2.88 because he was freezing) so it wasn’t anywhere near the 5 I had hoped for or even the 4 I was more realistic about but it is too cold to be running outside that late and it’s too dark to be running by myself if it wasn’t too cold so it’s sort of a lose lose situation. I’ll make up for it over the next few days though.
*and yes I LOVE my iPhone and all of its wonderful apps! *
It was a tough run because of the cold air but once I hit that 1.5 mile mark my running head kicked in and I started to feel better… my breathing slowed down and my legs were feeling good. All of my friends that are true runners just call that your “auto-pilot” and most say that it says anywhere from 1.5-3 miles for auto-pilot to kick in. Usually it takes me closer to 2.5 or 3 but yesterday I guess I just got lucky!
I should also mention here that on top of my running being back in full swing I have also joined a soccer team w/ some work people! We play on Sunday nights and it is a TON of fun. Probably my favorite co-ed indoor team I have ever played on. We are by no means the best in the league and I think we have only won 1 game so far but the highlight of the season was the fight that happened during the one game.
So back in the swing of things making changes and doing my best =) Guess that is all you can ask for right?
