Lighting Bug Run- 5K

This past weekend Tim and I completed our FIRST 5K TOGETHER! This was Tim’s first race ever so I was really pumped to see how he would do and of course his naturally running ability kicked in right away and he stayed with me the entire time!

The race was at Buckeye Woods park in Medina and while I usually LOVE that park and really enjoy running there it was way too crowded. 500 people on one course that goes into the woods on a pretty narrow path was not the best for running. Honestly at about a mile in it really wasn’t too bad. Everyone started to break up a little bit and we ran at a very steady 10:21 pace which is honestly faster than I have been at. But that initial mile- gosh I bet at some points we were at like a 13 min/mile pace trying to dodge in and out of other people.

But enough with the complaining and on to the good stuff! This race was at night and as you can imagine from the name we were meant to look like little lightning bugs and ya know what? We did! Our t-shirts were dark green but the bug on them lit up and Tim and I both wore a necklace and bracelets made out of glow sticks. I thought we looked pretty darn awesome until I noticed what the other people were wearing! One group of girls actually like weaved in their glow sticks into their laces on the tennis shoes so they looked really cool! On little kid accidentally busted open his glow stick so his face had the actually glow stuff on it (and his clothes for that matter which his mom did not seem too pleased with) and while I’m sure it felt gross it looked really cool!

So after breaking away from the pack by some miracle we found my and friend and fellow CrossFitter Ashley! I never would have thought out of 500 people I would actually find her but turns our our pace is pretty similar so there we were.. running together! Her friend Becky was awesome too- they were both working hard and I was impressed! There is just something about being surrounded by people that work hard and do their best that inspires me. Those girls were awesome and I’ll tell you what.. I was ridiculously inspired by Tim. I was so impressed by how well he did and how he stuck with us the entire time. We clocked in at just over 32 min which I think considering the very slow first mile was an awesome time! Realistically I think we could have been right at or under 30 if we hadn’t had such a slow start.

Tim and I after the race! YAY!

Even better than the race was when Tim said to me “I see why you like these races” and then even proceeded to say that he would participate in the Susan G Komen race. If you can remember last year at Komen I  hit my best 5K time yet clocking in under 29 min… my goal was to finish under 30. It is the one race that I really consider to be my timed competitive race. Other than that one I enjoy doing them but don’t beat myself to come in at some amazing time. For me, races are mostly about having fun.

The reason I think everyone should do a race just one time is because it is awesome. Clearly Tim is a good example of this… he claimed he would never race and due to some weird things happening he had to race with me on Saturday and he enjoyed it. There is seriously something so amazing about a group of strangers coming together for a common cause (I love when it is like a cause for good) to inspire each other and participate in something amazing. The Komen run for example is all about running for those men and women who are truly inspirational. Those that beat such a terrible disease and those that fought and didn’t win but were strong and amazing. Even if you do not consider yourself a runner…. which Tim does not at all… I think getting into one race is an experience you will enjoy and never forget. The entire concept of it is just a really cool things to be part of.

Plus, after the race they always have good snacks to eat Winking smile

Do you have a favorite race you participate in every year?!

Any races in the Akron/Cleveland and/or Charlotte area you want to share?

Having a good “Thyme”

So the other night I was delighted when my parents asked me to join them for dinner with some of their friends Joan and Noel! Joan and Noel have been my mom’s clients for quite some time but are so much more than that! They are truly 2 wonderful people that Tim and I enjoy talking to and sharing our lives with. So when I was presented with the chance to spend Noel’s birthdya with him laughing at stories and enjoying a delicious meal, I jumped on it! I knew the company would be great and the the laughs would flow freely but I couldn’t have done anything to prepare for the meal of the century!

First, I should start off my introducing Thyme a little bit. It is, in my opinion, the classiest yet non judgemental restaurant we have in Medina. Thyme combined an impressive menu and a modern envrionment with an every day family feel that your comfortable wearing jeans or a little black dress to. The owner, John, is always out and about in the restaurant talking to customers, asking for recommendations, and just making sure that everyone is happy. It is a MUST SEE in Medina. If you want to check out their menu you can click here!

Tim and I started off by ordering a few drinks.. for me a lemon drop martini and Tim, who loves the fall season, opted for the pumpkin martini. They were both delicious so I think it was a toss up on who made the best choice! Then John made his way over and laughed when he saw us looking at menus. “you don’t need menus tonight, do you?” he said. As Tim and I looked at each other we thought NOPE guess not! John took our menus away and headed into the kitchen to cook up a master peice.

*and yes the drinks are just as delicious as the food*

Part #1: Appetizer

This first dish was a poached egg over something tartar which I think means raw. The highlight was probably the escargot that was served (little black egg looking things). John will have to excuse my terrible description of what was on my plate but look at the presentation on that thing? Sure this was a special occasion for us but this is the type of presentation you can ALWAYS expect at Thyme!

Dish #2:

This salad was delic! The orange things are actually orange beets which is the same for the red stuff on the side there. I never actually knew I liked beets until I had this salad. Joannie was kind enough to assure me that this was because I had only ever had canned beets which was the total and absolute truth! The crumbled cheese and the delicious spinach put this course at the top of my list for potential favorites. The taste was so good I could have stopped here but kept going as John brought up the third course

Before I move on let me mention that we also got served wine that complimented each dish we were having… which left me very satisfied!

Dish #3

The seafood part of the dish! I mean it tasted like heaven which I suppose could be expected when you serve fish with a beautiful flower on top! Don’t worry, I managed to remove the flower before I dug into this! The first was flakey and cooked to perfection. At the back there, there was this potato dish that was delicious! Had Tim not finished his, I probably would have went for seconds!

4th course:

The meat! This meat was tender and just fell apart and melted in your mouth! The mixture of the greens on top was just enough! There was risotto served on the side and I L.O.V.E.D. it. That may have actually been my favorite part of the meal and I didn’t even think I liked risotto!

Final Course: DESSERT

No birthday dinner would be completed with a dessert! For this special night, John served us pecan pie with ice cream and pumpkin bark! So, I don’t think I usually like pecan pie but this was more like a pecan cake which was absolutely delicious! I wish I could say I had some self control and didn’t devour this thing but that would be a lie!

So needless to say this was a dining experience to remember! Joannie told me that every time you eat something new, something you have never had before, that you are supposed to make a wish. So if those wishes come true I have a lot of good things coming my way before I ate more new food that night than I will probably remember! It was delicious and even though I had to be rolled into Bed Bath and Beyond before heading home, it was worth  it!

Come to think of it, I wish Noel had a birthday every week!
