What are you gonna do with that Nutella?

So it has probably been hard to tell since I haven’t posted anything delicious in a while but no worries- I’m still eating! I thought it was about time I provided a few updates on food!

I L.O.V.E Nutella . So much that I did that obnoxious period between all capital letters thing that most people hate. It was worth it. I don’t know why (or maybe it is because my Mom wouldn’t let us have it) but I had never had Nutella before. I know that is totally weird right? Apparently it is like a right of passage for most children  but there I was in my high chair with the old school peanut butter my mom was feeding me. Just kidding I love peanut butter too. But yea so Tim and I made a trip to Walmart to pick up some of those new Lime-a-Rita things that Bud Light now makes (delicious by the way) and I randomly decided in that moment that I should get some Nutella there mostly because I was starving and wanted to eat everything at Walmart. And it was  a Super Walmart so that’s really saying something. So with my Nutella and my go-to candy Twizzlers in hand (and the booze of course) I headed to the check out only to be judged by the young kid at the check out.

“What are you gonna do with that Nutella” he asks

“I’m going to eat it” I respond “Don’t you like Nutella?”

“yea I like it” he says “with crackers”

It’s seriously like this kid knew… like he read my mind.. that at that very moment I was in search of a spoon so I could eat that Nutella in the car on the way to Kara and Dana’s house. If he just thought he was making a joke he was wrong. He caught me red actually dark brown handed.

Lucky for me I did find a spoon on the way out =)

So 2 days later I also enjoyed my new favorite condiment as a side to my apples Tim got for me at Sam’s Club! And it was DELICIOUS!

The perfect little treat

I mean how could you note love that gooey goodness?

So yea I have been eating… too much Nutella. Were you ever under the impression that this stuff was good for you? For some reason Tim and I both were. I think it must be the “part of a balanced meal” call out on the packaging… and which part would that me? the fat? Because gosh that stuff has a high calorie count and some sugar… but this wasn’t part of my healthy choice anyway so I really wasn’t that disappointed.

I paired it with an apple which I think counts for something?

So even though my snacks may not be the most balanced part of my diet (regardless of what the packaging says) breakfast on the weekends is still delicious!

Tim’s favorite is definitely the wraps we make! Stuffed with scrambled eggs, bacon, cheese, AND HASHBROWNS (a special new treat we did) there is no better start to any day. It has everything you would need perfectly grilled in a low-carb tortilla on the George Foreman. Tim usually chooses the cheddar cheese and sometimes I go nuts and use mozzarella.

And the next day what do you do after a breakfast like this one?

You make another one silly.

While the wrap is Tim’s favorite this is mine. Scrambled eggs with salt and pepper (between 2 ppl I use 4 eggs and 2 egg whites- we like to eat) 3 slices of bacon since I always eat one before it goes on my plate 2 slices of bacon and fruit on the slide! Strawberries and blueberries for me but just strawberries for Tim. Apparently he doesn’t want blueberries to save his life some day like I do.

The deliciousness of the day doesn’t really stop at breakfast! It continues on to dinner where I get to enjoy some of my favorite foods! My go-to easy meal after a hard work-out is a ground turkey burger (or really lean ground beef) on a wheat thin piled high with some avocado and onions and tomatoes.

I’ll even eat this one twice in one week! I’ll mix up my sides to ensure it’s not totally boring! Sometimes I splurge to the full bun too. Big spender.

Moral of my story? I just love food. Even after 26 years of eating a lot of the same stuff I can still find new and exciting things (cough cough Nutella)

Delicious.

Shopping in the “Special” Section

So I recently have made my way over to the “special” section of the grocery store. Acme has a special little section of their “Organic and Natural” items that I have been browsing recently and I have tried a few new delicious items I thought I would share with you!

#1: All Natural “Good Greens”

These things apparently account for 100% of your daily fruits and vegetables and they were on sale for 3/$5 so I thought what the hey give it a try and I am pretty glad I did.

I grabbed a chocolate raspberry one that didn’t even make it out of the parking lot because I was starving.

I got a chocolate peanut butter one

and I got a wildberry one

If you are having some trouble reading that packing it says that it has….

  • Omego 3
  • 12g Protein
  • 3 Probiotics
  • 40 Antioxidants
  • Low Glycemic

All of those things sounded relatively healthy to me so I was game to give them a try.

My review: pretty good. I typically enjoy a good protein/bar type snack and fell in love with Luna bars for a short time a while back. The chocolate raspberry one to me tasted a little chalky compared to the others but I found the chocolate peanut butter one just delightful. If that claim is true (and I guess it should be close to true to be on the packaging) than it was worth every bite to consume all of my daily fruits and vegetables I need.

It was also pretty filling which is good for me since I typically like to enjoy these types of snacks mid-afternoon when my belly starts growling at me.

#2 Kashi Blueberry Waffles

First off, I love Kashi commercials. I am assuming that is a legit consumer test where they walk around and make people try their cereal. That one where they open up the egg shaped bowl and BAM there is a box of cereal… pure genius I tell you.

So when Casey suggested I try to the Kashi waffles I excitedly and ridiculously exclaimed YES! Then when I realized they had blueberry I yelled to Tim from across the store quietly mentioned to Tim “look blueberry!”

Here are a few things I love about waffles in general…

  • They are easy to travel to work with
  • They make you feel like a kid again
  • I love 1000 toppings for waffles and can mix it up all of the time

So at work I enjoyed them with some peanut butter on one of them and some syrup on the other (I often can make up my mind).

And then at home I enjoyed them in a much fancier version with blueberry syrup on top with strawberries and blueberries on the side. Truly they were delicious.

My one and only complaint.. they are a little pricer compared to the not good for you at all kind which I guess is to be expected. They were around $4 for 8 waffles so I guess I’ll have to keep my eye out for some coupons on these things so I can afford them!

My overall review: Delicious. Cannot wait to buy more. I loved loved that the waffles actually had a blue tint.. looked so authentic compared to those waffles that are white as a ghost with weird sugary blue specs.

#3 Van’s French Toast Sticks

Another recommendation from Casey… Van’s French Toast sticks.

If you have a market day near you by one of your schools then you may know how delicious market day French toast sticks are. But you have your full week of sugar intake in one simple little stick which gets your belly no where… try like 10 sticks to satisfy this belly!

But these are just wonderful. You can pop them right in the toaster and they look like a piece of break except that they rip apart and turn into little French toast sticks with a hint of cinnamon that is just enough but not overwhelming.

Drawback is again the price. You only get 6 of these puppies for close to $4 so I guess it’s another opportunity for me to start finding some valuable coupons!

Since I ate these at home and I knew I was going to have a very active day I loaded up on breakfast and had one piece (or 3 sticks) of the French Toast with 2 over-medium eggs (which Tim cooked up for me- so sweet) and fruit on the side! Raspberries and blueberries.. yummy!

My overall review: Great! I will buy these again… tasted great and I know they are better for you than what I would buy otherwise. Plus, they are super easy to transport and something that Tim likes as well!

Adventures with Peyton

I knew it would be another great weekend to write about considering Tim and I were starting off the weekend with a Friday slumber party with Peyton!

Friday morning we started off on the right foot and went for a run. Things started to fall into place a little more and since it wasn’t raining and my stomach wasn’t about to fall out of my body we made it for a solid 2.5 miles and it felt pretty good. I am not a full blown running but I am getting closer! YAY This belly thing is really starting to get to me though because it just doesn’t feel great when I am running. I am just going to keep an eye on that weird painful cramp that keeps occurring and see what happens! So after our run on Friday I headed off to work with Casey and Brody. For breakfast I made a smoothie and finally remembered to put everything in it. So yes it had the flax and the spinach in it along with some strawberries, bananas, and some regular milk (I am out of Almond Breeze Almond Milk and need to get to the store). So after a long morning at work I sat down to a pretty tasty lunch!

My sister had called in the morning and said that Pey would be eating dinner with us now so I had to run to the grocery store during lunch so Casey and I multi-tasked and ate at Buehler’s Restaurant inside the store. We both decided on breakfast for lunch and I was pretty glad I did! I got this meal called the “Health break” which is made with scrambled cholesterol free eggs, squash, peppers, tomatoes, and onions. It has some fruit and toast on the side. I finished all of that but the toast and went on my merry little way for the day after gathering up some supplies for dinner!

Mid-way through the day I was told by some co-workers that they were making a Dairy Queen run and well I couldn’t pass it up. So I got a small vanilla cone at DQ and ate just the ice cream- no cone. I figured I saved myself at least a few calories that way right? I pretty much don’t remember the last day I had DQ so this was a real trip!

As soon as I got home I had to start cooking dinner! I decided on doing a picnic dinner at the park so I made some Chicken Salad that had celery, grapes, bacon, salt, and pepper in it. I realized half way through baking the chicken the George Foreman would have been a MUCH faster way so I finished the chicken off there, cut it into cubes, and mixed it with all the goodies and a bit of Kraft’s Olive Oil Mayo. DELICIOUS!

With that tasty chicken salad I also packed Stacey’s Pita Chips (one of my many favorites), some weird melon thing that Tim cut up, and apple slices. I packed all that up and headed toCroghanParkwith Peyton, Tim, and my bestest Kara. My mom were out and about inAkronpicking up some of our favorite Sushi from Sakura so they decided to stop at the park to meet us for dinner! We had quite the spread.

The Spread

Kara and I enjoying our picnic

After our bellies were full we ran around like monkey’s chasing Peyton and playing on the playground. I’d like to say that we were there for her but clearly Tim was enjoying himself just as much as Pey was…

Pey was just running around like a mad woman tackling everyone and being her adorable self! She loves to be chased so we did quite a bit of that! Mark and Casey were at the park walking Brody so Casey got to swing Pey around a few times too! It will be sad when she is too heavy and too big for us to throw here all around! While we were playing in the jungle jim my mom decided everyone should work out a little while we were there so we did the monkey bars….

We did our pull-ups

And we tackled Pappa a few time!

Needless to say we had a great time!

After the bugs started to come out and started eating us we decided it was time to leave so we went to… get ready for it… MENCHIES! Yay for MENCHIES! It was PACKED. Literally the line was out the door but as I am sure you can assume it was totally worth it. Pey was a little overwhelmed at the amount of choices she had but Poppa hooked her up with a few samples and she finally decided on Strawberry, Vanilla, and Snickerdoodle. I think she added in gummy worms, marshmallows, white chocolate chips, sprinkles, and one random blackberry. Needless to say this was that little 3-year olds HEAVEN! See- she was loving it.

Kara and I each had our own as well! I decided on the Strawberry-Kiwi Sherbet (I really should start branching out here soon) and lots of fresh fruit. Kara’s was way tastier and had chocolate goodness and all sort of tasty treats. I was still satisfied with mine and felt good about my choice! I did sneak a few bites of Pey’s ice cream!

After we made it home Pey took a bath and we all (Pey, Tim, and myself) all laid down on the couch to watchAlicein Wonderland. I think we made it about 10 minutes in before we all feel asleep!

In the morning Pey woke up and suggested Pancakes… I realized pretty quickly that I was out of Milk (ugh!) so we took a quick trip to the grocery store in our PJ’s. My sister is VERY tidy and always has Pey looking fabulous so Pey was half excited half embarrassed I was having her go out in her sized T-shirt and pants! *Sorry Britt but there was only like 10 ppl in the store! No worries*

Pey's Breakfast

My Breakfast

When we got make I made breakfast while Tim and Pey read books. We ended up having pancakes, bacon, grapes, strawberries (that Pey picked out at the store), Tim and I had scrambled eggs, and Pey had a hard boiled egg and that was breakfast. Clearly Pey enjoyed it…

She concentrated pretty hard on that breakfast

After breakfast we got ready and Pey and I headed out the door to the “Touch a Truck” event my sister was putting on for her work. The event is a way to get the community together to meet the emergency personnel in the area and for the kids to see cool big trucks and equipment for them to play on. The highlight was probably the balloon animal guy that Pey and I waited in line for (like 20 min!) so she could get a purple and pink flower. I think I took her to the event a little too tired… but hey my sister looks great!

They had a pretty cool jumpy thing too!

And they even got to sit in the “Children Life Support Team Helicopter” which was totally cool!

I was sad to leave Pey but after our day of fun I had to head home to get ready for more adventures with Tim and some friends!

It’s a great day to talk about FOOD

I think I can honestly say that food is probably in my top 5 things that I like to talk about. I think it is a great way to spice up your life, create relationships, and it really helps you realize that you have things in common with other people! So today, besides telling you about my run this morning I am going to give you a little run down of what I ate and discuss some of my own preferences.

Run first though. So the run this morning was HOT. Let me just say now, for those of you that live in warmer clients and exercise outside I just don’t know how you do it. I assume if you have lived there a while you are just more used to the heat than we are here in Ohio but oh my gosh was it hot out. Luckily I was mentally prepared for the heat because everyone at work has been talking about this 100+ heat wave we would be having so I was like okay I can deal with this. So after having my Bagel Thin with the almightly tasty MaraNatha chocolate almond butter I was ready for a delicious day. Tim and I headed out (yes he came again) into the heat to complete another 6 min on 1:50 min off interval.

Warm Up 5 min
Run 6 min
Walk 1:50 min

I was feeling pretty rough today and I think I know why. So last night Tim and I went to his mom’s house for dinner and we decided to order Chinese. Well I decided on the chicken lo mein on the condition that Tim should share his szechuan chicken with me. He was kind enough to agree so we got those two items to share. Oh my goodness did that weight me down. I don’t know how but I must have gotten how much sodium is in Chinese food and while it tasted great going down the day it didn’t feel so great moving all around as I ran. Note to self: Chinese food and learning to love to run is NOT a good mix. So I think I can honestly say that every single interval this morning was tough. It was definitely a reminder to me that you are what you eat and that is effects everything you do. I could tell a huge difference in the amount of strength I had to keep moving based on my meal the night before. It’s too bad you can’t just like start over in the morning. I mean mentally I can do that physically I can’t just tell my body to forget what I ate the night before… trust me… it remembers! So run was really rough today and at one point I even contemplated quitting (although I did not say this aloud to Tim). I thought well maybe if I just cut 1 or 2 minutes off the end that would be OK and I wouldn’t have to tell anyone and then I remembered. DUH the whole purposes of having other people read about this journey is so they can go on it with you and therefore I would have to tell you. So whether you know it or not you kept me running this morning! Thanks J

After the run all I could do is sit on the couch. This is not like me at all. The last few days I have been stretching while watching the news or heading up to shower right away. I was so tired I couldn’t do much more than sit there so Tim showered first instead. By 6:40 he reminder me that I still have to be at work at my normal time so it would probably be a good idea to shower. Somehow, someway I got ready in about 35 min and made my way downstairs to one of my most useful appliances… the smoothie master! Okay it is actually just a blender, food processor combination thing but it sounds much better to call it a smoothie master.

Today I decided on the following, 1 frozen banana (yep, figured out how to peel it), Chocolate PB2: Powdered Peanut Butter, Almond Breeze almond milk, protein powder my mom had given me, strawberries, and spinach. It was just delightful!

Look at all that good stuff

You can see that I put about a handful of spinach in there and I promise you that you can’t taste it.

It does give it this funny texture though and if you don’t drink it right away the green color seems to take over and discolors the entire masterpiece a bit. You can see that for now the strawberries own the color in this smoothie so it really depends on what you put in it. If you use blueberries it will be always be blue because the colors of those things are always the winner against the other fruits. Insert mental picture of fruit fighting with some swords here.

Our traveling smoothies

What I love most about this, other than its delicious taste, is how easy it is to travel with and how full it keeps me throughout the day. I usually have some sort of snack, an apple or something, before lunch if I have time but this thing will take me all the way till noon if it has to.

Since Tim and I had our allergist appointment this afternoon I was able to eat lunch at home, which drastically opened up the possibility to something delicious. I met with the guy who should have fixed my roof already but hasn’t who will be fixing my roof sometime in the future first to show him the nasty spot on the ceiling. So after he left I made myself some lunch.

My lunch!

Today I put a Morning Star veggie burger on a bed of romaine lettuce that I had added some roma tomato (which is always much better priced than other tomatoes) and cilantro too. I topped off the burger with a smashed up avocado so that I didn’t miss out on the idea of having “condiments” on your burger. I set all of that alongside some Stacey’s pita chips (my favs!). I will tell you what, this thing was AMAZING. I was so full by the end of it and the avocado was just the tough this burger salad needed. It helped everything sort of stick together which made it a pretty big and cohesive meal. The pita chips fulfilled the extra crunch and salt cravings that I usually have at lunch. I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone and I think next time I’ll add some spice to it with some hot peppers or something similar. And by the way these burgers are very well prices at one of our club stores nearby, BJ’s, so if you have a BJ’s near you… check it out!

Best condiment there is

After lunch Tim and I headed off to the allergist where I found out that I don’t have asthma but that both Tim and I are allergic to every single thing found in nature. The doctor even suggested that Tim never mow the grass and oh let me tell you how devastated he was NOT. Good thing allergy shots are an option! So after we both got over 50 allergy scratches on our backs we headed home to prepare a romantic anniversary dinner for my parents. Sunday is their 29th anniversary but they are heading off to beautiful Mexico that day so we had to celebrate a little early. I wanted to do something special for my parents because now that I am engaged I feel like I look at marriage differently. I mean in reality I committed myself to Tim a long time ago but somehow the whole ring and down on one knee thing makes it more real so we planned on showing my parents that we love them and that we admire their love for one another.

Step 1 for this dinner was simple… attempt to create a somewhat romantic atmosphere while not making it weird for Tim and I to eat with them as well. I think we succeeded when we decided on 3 candles to put in the middle of the table and a little less than bright lighting. Simple enough to appreciate.

Step 2 was make the menu. I decided to do a stuffed pepper recipe that I found here. I ended up making some small changes because I wanted to use reduced fat cheese and wanted to spice it up a little bit. The peppers were amazing and even though my dad said his lips were tingling a bit he seemed to like them! Next to the peppers I made 1 roll for each person (because who needs more than 1), fruit salad that had kiwi, banana, strawberry, watermelon, blueberries, and blackberries, and then steamed up some edamame because my parents originally wanted sushi. I can’t make sushi so I just thought a familiar side dish would be a nice touch. I will say that these peppers were extremely easy for me to make and this recipe was simple enough to follow. I would say to go ahead and start preparing about an hour and a half before you want to eat because the cutting, simmering, and baking takes about that long.

Mom and Dad's anniversary dinner

Dinner was scrumptious and everyone seemed to enjoy all of the flavors. While my dad enjoyed a beer the rest of us enjoyed a glass of white wine. The meeting ended with some good conversation and then some goodbyes since we won’t be seeing them until they get back from their trip.

Happy 29th Anniversary Mom and Dad

My mom made a video last year to celebrate their 28th Anniversary. Check it out on her blog here.

Went to bed around 9 and I believe Tim joined me around 11. How he gets up after only 6.5 hours of sleep is beyond me but I wish I could do it. I’m a pretty cranky girl if I don’t get at least 7 hours.

Hope you enjoyed this day of food!

What’s your favorite meal to make?
