So for those of you that tuned in a few weeks ago you already know I was participating in the Advocare 24 Day Challenge. If you didn’t and want to catch up on it you can check out that post here. For you real Engaged & Running fans you also probably checked in at my 11 day mark where I was peeing a lot, wishing for sugar, but enjoying some tasty recipes.
So I should just get down to it right? What you all really care about are the numbers… at the end of the day how did my body change over the course of 24 days? Well in case you are wondering I hace been feeling better both physically and mentally about myself. My pants are looser and although I am thrilled to be able to indulge in some sugar when I want to it was well worth the healthy eating, supplements, and all of the wonderful challenges that the challenge brought upon me.
As a reminder, here were my measurements that I started out with.
AHHH to share these again is just as scary. Ok deep breath. Here we go.
- Weight: 138
- Body Fat: 20.8%
- Chest: 35.5”
- Waist (belly button): 30.5”
- Hips: 36.5”
- Thighs: 21.25” (right) 21.5” (left)
- Calves: 14.25” (right and left)
- Arms: 10.5” (right) 10.25” (left)
And now here are my FINAL results… DRUM ROLL PLEASE… bummmm bummm bummm
- Weight: 136
- Body Fat: 19.9%
- Chest: 34.25″
- Waist (belly button): 29.75″
- Hips: 35.75″
- Thighs: 20.75” (right) 20.5” (left)
- Calves: 14″ (right) 14.24” (left)
- Arms: 10” (right) 10.25” (left)
So the key to everyone losing ENORMOUS amounts of inches on any challenge is to add it all up. So that means with neck, shoulders, chest, waist, thighs, calves, and arms I lost a total of 6.75″.
My thoughts now that it is all said and done? I loved it. Now only do my results speak for themselves but I really liked the products. I still have some left over meal replacements that I will continue to use. I just ordered some more Spark drink (yesss for grape) and I also ordered some probiotic stuff that was not part of the challenge but that I tried and loved. We’ll see how it goes- I may end up ordering more meal replacement down the line as well because those are such a nice easy snack.
Was this hard? Sure it was. Part of being human is wanting all of the things you can’t have. So all I wanted on Thanksgiving was the delicious looking candy cake that my mom bought for Tim. What did I have instead? Some sweet potato pie without the crust. It was a good choice “treat”. It was hard to not eat mashed potatoes and not have all of the creamy cream of mushroom soup in the green bean casserole but the green beans we had were tasty, the sweet potatoes were delicious, the turkey was tasty, and we had a great time.
Making treats is extra hard. Being at work with treats and candy laying around are also hard but come on we are all strong enough to make it 24 days doing what is best for our body. It’s only 24 days right?!? We are strong individuals… 24 days is not that long.
So would I recommend it? Yes I would. I think it was a great jump start to some of the plateaus I have hit. I was thrilled to see my numbers look like they did when I was a senior in High School playing soccer.
Should you do it? Yea sure maybe. If you are interesting in getting a kick start and you are willing to make some sacrifices over the course of 24 days than i think this is surely the right thing for you. Does it cost a little bit of money? Yes, but what program doesn’t. So if you are interesting ask for Advocare for Christmas. Giving the gift of health is always a good gift to give. It pretty much keeps on giving.
And I hope it keeps giving to me =)
Also, don’t forget to check out the give-away we have this week! A $25 gift certificate to Go Sport ID.
So I am now on Day 11 of my Advocare challenge. If you missed Day 1, you can read about it here. If you have no freaking clue what the Advocare Challenge is all about you can read about that here. But essentially it is a challenge that jump starts your weight loss and healthy living goals.
Days 1-10 are the cleanse phase which is what I just completed. These are the days that are all about “cleansing your body of toxins and preparing for optimal nutrient absorption”, and they say that you may even enjoy some weight loss! I did get on a scale today to know about the weight loss portion but I feel pretty cleansed (in a non-gross way haha).
Here is my general feedback thus far…
- Feeling good- not bad days
- Still peeing A LOT
- Neon pee in the mornings after I started the Probiotic
- No “bathroom” issues with the fiber
- Good amount of energy- not hitting my 3pm “wall” that I typically do
- Enjoying the taste of the meal replacements- wishing the fiber didn’t taste like crap
- Backing off on my catalyst a little because they are expensive and I can’t afford to take 100 a day
- Love the fruit punch Spark- like the orange but prefer the fruit punch
- I thought the labeling of the boxes was confusing and the packaging of the probiotic and herbal cleanse are exactly the same. If I could give Advocare a piece of advice I would recommend they find a way to make them different- I took the wrong thing one day because they looked identical and I didn’t realize that at first.
- Good conversation started- people like to hear about this stuff
- I have had some “sugar” cravings where I am considered destroying an entire bag of Oreos (or Twinkies- thanks to their recent departure from society) but was able to refrain
- I did a 5K (read about that tomorrow) and wanted carbs ALL day long after that run
- I cheated … twice. I had one marshmallow after my 5K Chocolate Run and then I had a little finger lick of peanut butter one day. I suppose that’s not too bad.
- I made plans to go to Menchies for FRO-YO the day the challenge is over. I think that helped get me over my sweets craving.
- I’ve had very little of the “optional complex carbs”. I have had brown rice twice during the challenge, but that is it.
- I have been eating A LOT of strawberries and blueberries. I may end up a start on Willy Wonka soon
What I have really enjoyed about the challenge is this book of recipes! 24-Day-Challenge-Cookbook
Below are some of my reviews!
Advocare 24-Day Challenge Recipes I’ve tried…
Slow Cooker Chicken Fajitas
One of the best meals we have ever had. Seriously. I will forever be making shredded chicken (and anything else that can be shredded) in the crock-pot. The chicken was ridiculously juice and just delicious. I was really nervous about putting raw chicken in the crock-pot but it cooked all the way through and very nicely. The flavor was amazing- a little kick to it which we love and just delicious. If you don’t make this you are crazy. Challenge or not.
In the crockpot
On my plate- delicious
Slow Cooker Salmon
Just ok. Cooking the salmon in the crock-pot was a big win for me but this lacked some flavor. I will say that we didn’t have a lemon so we used lemon juice but I still don’t think the flavor would have been there. Not terrible but not a huge winner for me.
I love tuna and this was no exception. Very good- very easy! Delicious as a lettuce wrap =) Big win.
Mediterranean Stuffed Peppers
Hmmm I’m not 100% sure how to review here. The peppers tasted very Mediterranean and I think if you like that flavor these were a big WIN. Tim and I found out we are partial to the classic American stuffed peppers but these had a TON of flavor- exploding with flavor actually and were very easy to make! If you like these flavors- go for it!
Some of the other recipes I want to try…
- Slow Cooker Rice and Chicken
- Asian Chicken Stir Fry
- Grilled Caribbean Chicken
- Asian Lettuce Wraps
Some of my own favorite recipes I have…
I made this on my own- literally just throw good for you things together in a bowl and it was delicious.
- Heaping handful of Spinach
- Bacon (microwave ready bacon- the best kind)
- Shrimp (sautéed in some lemon juice and some seafood seasoning)
- Toasted Walnuts (just on the stove top for a few minutes)
- 1/2 Chopped Avocado
- 1.5 cups Strawberries
So the next days are the days that “give your body the best tools you need to achieve your next weight management goal”. The difference is that I am taking a metabolic nutritional system (more pills throughout the day) for weight management, appetite control, and overall wellness , I’m not longer on the fiber (thank goodness- my least favorite part), and I am done with the herbal cleanse tablets. Still doing the meal replacement and the spark drinks along with the catalyst.
So we’ll talk about this again after day 24…. or maybe after Thanksgiving because I may need to vent about how much I missed the StoveTop stuffing! AHHH that will be tough.
Gosh, I apologize for being MIA the last few days but I have been ridiculously busy! I spent the last few days in San Francisco gallivanting around having a great time meeting with one of our advertising partners for work and I’ll tell you what… I LOVE San Fran. Truly an amazing city.
Honestly, if I would have actually moved there with Rubbermaid way back when I was first placed in San Fran I think I may still be there. It was just fabulous. So much to see and do there… so many cute little bars and restaurants to hit up and the people there were great. Not like the Southern hospitality nice but more like minding your own business and just letting everyone do their own thing nice.
So I didn’t get to see the Full House house and I didn’t get the chance to check out the park that they have their family picnic in but the girl that lives there said it is a lie because you can’t drive in that park. So that was a little bit of a let down but other than that I was happy the entire time.
We went and had a fancy lunch where I had a spinach salad with grilled chicken. I didn’t snap a photo because we were all sitting pretty close to each other and you know how I feel about snapping pictures in front of co-workers… we just are not there yet! After the meeting with went for “Walktails” which in California terms is just stopping on the way to your dinner location to get a drink at another bar/restaurant. Since you get to walk everywhere (dream come true- I am just jealous we can’t) it is called a walktail because you are walking to your cocktails… you got the first time didn’t you? Well, you’re welcome for the clarification.
So I had one of my favorites… drum roll please… a lemon drop at Original Joes. Except, it wasn’t actually THE Original Joe’s… it was just a recently opened version of Original Joe’s. Kind of like the Cheers in Boston that isn’t really the real cheers… well the one is but the one is not. In any case it was a great place for a drink and I’ll tell you what.. there is a lot of people in San Fran having a drink around 4pm. Hmmm… I wish I could do that.
After drinks we went to Park Tavern for a delicious dinner! We started out with these brussels sprout chips. Now I typically like most veggies but have had some trouble getting emotionally involved with my sprouts but I’ll tell you what… I was deeply in love with these things! So I came home and googled brussels sprout chips and I came across a recipe on eatreal and I think I will be trying them soon! I think the key is the right amount of salt and pepper on these things… and I am not certain but I think the ones at the restaurant had some garlic too.
Have you ever tried these or have any good sprout recipes I can try?!
Um we also have truffle fries for an app. I had never had truffle fries and well, I found more room in my heart to love something else on the table. OMG. Delicious. Terrible for you I’m sure but hey when in Rome San Fran.
So for dinner, it was a no brainer for me. I opted for the Tuna. This was SOOO fresh and delicious.
It was just as good as it looks (well assume you like tuna). Plus, it was just enough… you know how some restaurant just stuff you to death and you feel terrible when you leave? Not Park Tavern… it was great food, great portions, great atmosphere, and well it was pretty awesome company.
In the morning our flight was leaving until 12ish so we went for a nice walk on the Pier and along the water and got to see some Sea Lions! We were too far for a good pic but these things looks kind of ugly cute right?
Not the run I was hoping for but we still got in a 2 mile walk! But then we headed back to The Marriott and had a great breakfast… Egg White and Veggies with 1 slice of bacon and fruit on the side!
So as you can see above, I don’t really make the healthiest options when I am out and about. I LOVE food so I do like to explore… in moderation of course. Tasting the appetizers not eating the entire thing but when I am at home I try to make healthy choices and I have had quite a few good meals lately!
I am back to loving Tuna Fish. Totally weird that I go through phases like this I know but sometimes a girl just need a tuna fish sandwich (without the bread of course). So for dinner the other night I enjoyed some tuna fish (I make mine with just a little mayo and some salt and pepper), I put it on a bed of lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and this day I added a few olives on the side. Oh and tomato soup which I LOVE… I also go through phases with soup.
Hmm… I just realized that maybe I get bored with food sometimes? Interesting.
When I go to my parents I always seem to eat really well.. the other night my mom made these delicious stuffed peppers with some bacon, spinach, and tomato sandwiches (minus the bread of course). This was seriously my ideal meal…. mushrooms, spinach, tomato, and bacon… some of my favorite things! And easy to make… just eat up the sausage/meat on the stove and while that is cooking scoop out the inside of the mushroom then fill the mushroom with the mix (a little bit of cheese goes a long way to making it stick together so no need to over do it) then just pop them in the oven to cook a little until the mushroom gets soft.
The other dish was just some cooked all natural bacon from White Feather Meats with some tasty tomatoes and spinach that you can buy at any grocery store! My mom always buys the slightly spicy bacon which makes it even better in my mind!
Oh and I pretty much always make a bowl of guacamole at my parent’s house (because they always seem to have perfectly wipe avocados). I’ve made guac a few different ways and I’m no professional like Casey but I usually just use the packet of flavor with 2 avocados put in some chili powder and then add some tomatoes if I have them! Nice and easy.. but taste like it took hours!
And sometimes we just do a nice easy dinner with some all natural chicken and some 3 bean salad on the side!
So many delicious adventures in the kitchen!!
In case you need a refresher on what I decided for lent… I am giving up negative talk inspired by Caitlin over at Operational Beautiful! And so far it has been going great… the road to commitment is underway and being built!
What was really nice was that I woke up the other day to Tim participating and supporting me in this journey. This is the post-it note I woke up too..
There is just something wonderful about having the support from your significant other (or a friend or family member). Tim knows that, like many girls, I have struggled with self-esteem, body image, and just not feeling good about myself so it is so nice to have the support coming from him too! It was such a great surprise!!
I haven’t forgotten to make myself feel good too- and really concentrating on the things that matter most which is more about your inner self.
This has been really good for me and I really would encourage every girl to do it. It is just a nice break to think about the things that make you the person you are and the most important part of who you are… the person you are inside!
